One Cold Night Park IV – Shelley

Tiptoeing across the floor….was Shelley. “Trying to sneak in, huh”? asked Shannon with a little hint of sarcasm. Shelley froze as she looked up at Shannon and forced a smile. “What the hell are you doing up so early”? Shelley asked. “We’ll…I could ask you the same thing, you know”? Shannon asked laughingly. “But because of the fact that your my best friend, and the most wonderful roommate a girl could have, you won’t…will you”? Shelley ask as she shut the window and locked it. “Besides, I could always ask where you went last might too, miss secretive, now couldn’t I”? Shelley returned, raising an eyebrow. “We’ll..ok, I guess we are even then”, Shannon replied. “But I do know where you weren’t”, Shannon said folding her arms across her chest. Shelley shot Shannon a quick, nervous, glance as she ask “What do you mean”? “I know you weren’t with Paul, because he called for you three times”. “Paul!, Shan, what did you tell him”? Shelley almost yelled. “Relax, I covered for you, I told him you weren’t feeling well, and that the medicine you took put you out like a light, now, you owe me one” Shannon stated. “Not really”, Shelley replied, as she made them a cup of coffee. “What?” Shannon asked. “We’ll, while you were gone, Todd called too, again”. “Oh NO! What did you tell him?” Shannon asked almost afraid to hear the answer. Shelley had been known t come up with some pretty exaggerated excuses. Shelley laughed as she shoved Shannon’s coffee in her direction. “It’s kind of ironic actually”, Shelley replied. “What is”? Shannon asked. “I told Todd the same, exact thing, you know, that you were sick and the medicine thing you know”. Both girls laughed out loud. “What did he say?”, Shannon inquired. “Oh, I almost forgot, he said he would be by first thing this morning to check on you”. Shelley answered. “Oh NO!, I am a mess, I have to get a shower!”, she jumped up and headed for the bathroom leaving Shelley and her coffee at the table. She glanced back at Shelley who was sitting at the table with a blank look on her face. “Shelley, are you ok?”, Shannon asked. “Huh?” Shelley answered, “Oh sure, I’m fine, go ahead, you better hurry you know, first thing in the morning to Todd could mean any second now.” Shelley said. “You are right” Shannon exclaimed excitedly.

Something about that look on Shelley’s face did not sit right with Shannon. She was still sitting there with a strange smile across her bright, usually cheerful face, underneath all that hair. Shelley had hair as black as coal and it was nearly to her waist, flowing with natural curls. Her skin was smooth and olive tone, and her eyes were big and deep brown, except for when she decided to wear her green contacts, then she looked like a black cat you would see on Halloween. Shannon had known Shelley for about two years now. She didn’t know a whole lot about her except that she had had a pretty rough childhood. Her Mother left her when she was three and her Father had never bothered to stick around when she was born. She had lived with her Grandmother most of her life until she had died, when Shelley was 14. She had pretty much been on her own since then. She had basically depended on men to take care of her up until now. Shannon was the first female roommate she had ever had. Her taste in men didn’t say much either. Due to her beauty she had no problem attracting all types of men, but unfortunately, the type she was attracted to had always been bums. She admitted herself that she was a sucker for a good-looking rebel with a bag full of problems. The only place it ever got her was beat up and left all alone. Somehow, she would pick up the pieces and move on…..
