What is Love?

What is love? Some people go through life unable to answer this question. From the time we are children we are programed that we will grow up and marry our prince/princess and live happily after. If we could only know then what we know now. The idea of love and marriage become part of the American Dream, bringing some people to marry because they are either expected to, or just in a hurry to because they think that is what they are supposed to do. True love in hard to find. Sure, we can speak those untimely words of affection and whisper the “I Love You’s”, only to find that it ends in utter disaster a short time later. We find ourselves wondering “what on earth were we thinking?”, “How could we have thought we loved this person”? Once in a lifetime a person comes along that truly steals our heart. The feeling is not contributed to lust or infatuation. True love goes deeper and beyond this point. Sure, we can meet someone and know that surely this is the one to only find out that we grow tired and bored with that person as quickly as we became attracted. It is only the feeling after a period of time that you still can’t wait to see this person’s face, hear their voice, anxious to feel their touch that you realize you may be embarking on true love. True love goes beyond all of the physical aspects of the relationship. In true love you must find a greater friendship and understanding of the other person. You must be willing to give unselfishly to this other person, making sacrifices along the way. You must love this person enough to give yourself entirely to them, and in turn, they must love you enough not to let you. You should be able to look into each others eyes and the rest of the world stops turning. In your heart you should be able to trust this person with your life, beyond any shadow of a doubt. You must be able to forgive mistakes and learn to trust again. You must be willing to realize others make mistakes and let them make their own decisions even if you don’t agree with them. The verses state, to honor and cherish, through sickness and in health, until death do us part, those are some huge promises but in true love you never doubt them.

Some of us are lucky enough to find true love, others find what they “call” love and never experience the joy and pain of that true relationship. Wait a minute, who did I say are the lucky ones? You decide.
